I am in the process of adding links to resources for this discussion & resource group. Please take a look and let me know what I've missed! I hope you are enjoying the network and that you'll invite your friends and colleagues to join the network as well. This is a great group to share museum shops resources and ideas with each other!
Comment by Megan Southwood on February 20, 2012 at 12:59am I don't normally highlight products for museum shops, but I found a product that provides such a great interactive experience at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC that I wanted to get the word out.
The AMAZING Card is a product from the Netherlands that looks like a typcial card you would find in any museum gift shop, but it is actually a stereo viewer that allows you to see images in 3D. I bought six and I just couldn't put them down. It is really a fun experience to be able to view your favorite works of art in a three-dimensional image. Your eyes just travel endlessly from one detail to another. I would love to own the entire collection!
The stereo viewers are available featuring works of art, black & white photography, science and nature. So, the viewers would be a great great addition to the gift shops of almost any type of museum, zoo, aquarium or even botanic garden.
I think these would also be a great addition to any educational programs for children.
Another great option is to custom order these viewers with reproductions of works from your museum's collection. You can take photos (with two cameras at the same time) and send them to the company to be turned into custom-made viewers for your shop. Stereo Boxes and Stereo Cards are also available.
The Amazing Card was awarded the Museum Expressions Award for Best Product of 2008 in Paris.
Gift shops can check out the website for distribution information.
The rest of us can order these viewers directly from the website!
