This is all great information. I am running a workshop this year at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, and would be interested if anybody had any ideas concerning Vietnam...how to make it approachable, etc.

D, I will check out that piece you mentioned. Are you talking about the HL Hunley?

Thanks, Dee, that's a very useful link. We spent a little time earlier this week talking about this topic, prompted by Matt's post. Realized not only do we need to jumpstart our Civil War commemorative plans, we have some holdings from the War of 1812. And, there's some movement afoot with respect to Vietnam commemoration, though that's likely to have a long gestation period. Good stuff, though.

To Tim and Matthew:

The Virginia Civil War Sesquicentennial site is at http://www.virginiacivilwar.org/ -- loaded w/info and events.

Re: Civil War Navy -- I realize you are interested in actual events, but there is a dynamite short fiction piece called "The Peripatetic Coffin" by Ethan Rutherford that relates the imagined final days and minutes of the Henley. Emotionally moving and historically sensitive. Might integrate nicely w/more tangible records/artifacts.

Oh, our website is http://www.nmhm.washingtondc.museum/index.html and the Civil War exhibit is http://www.nmhm.washingtondc.museum/exhibits/nationswounds/index.html but that exhibit barely scratches the surface of the Civil War collections.

I can't speak for whether they'd do the survey but I would guess they'd be glad to talk by phone or email.

Virginia has a statewide celebration/commemoration of the Civil War set, I think? Need to check what Maryland has in place (they've got a pretty good organization for the War of 1812 commemoration already.) I unsure if Congress has finalized the commission they've been talking about with respect to some nationally coordinated scheme for the CW stuff. The Lincoln Bicentennial Commission seemed to work so well, wonder if they could follow that model.

Need to visit Hampton Roads again, not been in years. And definitely want to see HRNM - I think I'm a Twitter follower.

Tim, unfortunately I am in the Norfolk area at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, but our parent command the Naval History and Heritage Command is in Washington, D.C. I would love to hear more about what the National Museum of Health and Medicine has to offer. In fact, I am getting ready to send out a survey of museums concerning the Civil War Navy (collections, interest, etc.) to get a feel for what needs to be done in the planning stages of the sesquicentennial celebration. Would you or anybody at the NMHM be interested in doing the survey?

Matthew: Great note... We're talking around the edges about the Civil War commemorations and need to quickly get ourselves organized. NMHM was founded as the Army Medical Museum in 1862 and we have considerable holdings from that era. With respect to the Navy, are you asking about Union or Confederate, or both? I'd want to talk more with our collections staff to get more details, but I know we have a Confederate Navy surgeon's kit on display in our Civil War medicine exhibit. Are you in DC? (I meant to look before replying.) If so, come by to see that kit at some point and I can put you in touch with our staff on the broader question.

Do any of the museums in this group deal with the Civil War Navy? I am the coordinator for the United States Navy's efforts to commemorate the Civil War Navy (2011-2015) and would love to hear if anybody has collections or material relevent to this mission or knows of any other museums which do.
